This Scares Me

Today I saw the first part of my nightmare come true. I've feared the Conservative Tea Parties idea of "the way things should be" for a long time. They don't want us to have any socialism in our government at all. Many of these things we take for granted: public schools, police, fire departments, jails, public highways and more. They'd prefer that we individually decide which of these we want and pay for it ourselves. This is supposedly going to save us money because we won't pay for things we don't want.

There is a problem here though...I'm lower middle class and I can't afford to pay for any of these on my own. I have three kids and it'd take $1,300 a month for me to send them to a nearby private religious school. If there are no grants for college, none of my kids will be able to go. If I have to pay the police to investigate a burglary or attack on my property, well, the crime will go unpunished. How will we even have an interstate highway system if we have to pay for it on our own? I can only guess that it'll have to be a toll system.

I've had nightmares about this ever since I started hearing about the Tea Party. I read a book called "Jennifer Government" about a world not too far in the future where corporations have taken over, government is tiny and there are no taxes. One corporation decides to have an employee murder several people to make it look like people are killing other people for their shoes. This is supposed to make their shoes more desirable. The parents of one of the murdered people are forced to take a second mortgage on their house in order to pay the police to investigate their daughter's murder.

I'm afraid to live in a world like that. Today I read a a href="http://www.opposingviews.com/i/man-won-t-pay-for-fire-protection-firemen-watch-home-burn">news story that terrified me. It is really happening.

I feel like we are going backwards in our country. If this continues we'll have children and teenagers wandering the street because their parents can't afford to send them to school. More crime will follow maybe leading to more fires that may or may not be put out depending on whether you've paid for the service. My family of five is still sinking as far as finances go we have no extra money. Two days ago four warning lights came on in my car and I nearly broke down into tears because I don't have the money to have the car looked at, let alone fixed.
